Why Does Mother's Day Change Every Year?
The date and occasion of Mother's Day holds a rich history. To understand how it came into existence, we'll have to journey a bit through the past! What we know as Mother's Day today was first called Mothering Sunday in Europe, which was celebrated in Lent on the fourth of Sunday. It was a major tradition where the faithful would return to the "mother church".
However, with time, modern Mother's Day began to sow its seed in the United States, where the actual "mother" of the day was born! It was all the way back in 1864 when an American woman called Anna Jarvis was born and campaigned for a Mother's Day holiday. She was a steadfast activist who thought of associating a day for honoring her own mother, Ann Jarvis. Ann had devoted most of her life to talking about infant mortality rates across the country. She was known for hosting clubs for other mothers to teach them how to care for their children and help bring down those numbers.
Ann passed away in 1905. This is when her daughter, Anna Jarvis, decided that a national Mother's Day would be a great attempt to honour the noble efforts of her mother. Driven by this thought, she hosted a function on May 10, 1908, in her home town, which was the first-ever Mother's Day function. She held the second event in Philadelphia, which was attended by thousands of people. Soon, her work began to resonate nationally, and the cabinet of President Woodrow Wilson heard her story. It was then, in 1914, that Mother's Day became an official national holiday. The celebration was marked as the second Sunday for the month of May each year. Therefore, even today, after a year of searching when is Mother's Day this year, the day remains the same- the 2nd Sunday of May!
