Legend has it that, a young lad named Elmesu carved a message for his Babylonian father on a clay card wishing him health and happiness. Sonora's father Mr. William Jackson Smart, a civil war veteran raised her and five other siblings single-handedly post her mother's death, when she was 16. Though there was initial hesitation, she gained the support of YMCA and Spokane Ministerial Association. Spokane celebrated its first Father's Day on June 19, 1910.
